on for nearly a week, now former president bill clinton jumped into it tuesday mocking romney's debate strategy. >> but people are still frustrated about the economy, they want it fixed yesterday. so just show up with a sunny face and say i didn't say all that stuff the last two years. i don't have that tax plan i had for the last two years. you going to believe me or your lying eyes here, come on. >> former house speaker and illinois republican dennis hastert, who's a romney supporter. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to ask about the comments that president clinton made moderate mitt do you believe that romney has tacked to the center over the last few weeks? >> i think he wants to be president of 100% of all of the people in the united states. he has to address concerns to more moderate people that he has that sensitivity. i think he proved that as governor of massachusetts. >> do you think he had waited too long to do that? >> that's the way we have to go. and i looked at what he did in massachusetts. he went across the aisle, went with the legislature that was 87% democrat and got

'm struck by the fact that the two most important performances of this campaign-- bill clinton's and mitt romney's in that debate-- were the two wonkiests. somehow i think in a moment of great cynicism people like to be talked to in a serious powerpoint sort of way in which a lot of us in the media think oh, it's over their heads, they'll be bored. >> pelley: but don't be folksy? >> i wouldn't go too far away from the statistics and data which is ryan's home turf. >> the difference is bill clinton used the word arithmetic i've never heard paul ryan use the word arithmetic. arithmetic is a word understood by people who only went to the sixth grade or people with ph.d.s. it's one thing to be wonky and not to do it in obscure language that's off putting. i do think as well that the question of the vice president is always, judy, he's mr. august when he's chosen. joe lieberman was a popular choice in 2000 but the real test is mr. october, what he does in this debate. paul ryan was a popular choice among many conservatives but this is his moment of truth. and there's going to be a lot of nervo

of state, hillary clinton and other personnel. can we talk about that? or not? >> if it was in a classified setting the only thing that i would think is appropriate is any inconsistencies you have seen in testimony today you could relate. otherwise, the specifics i could not judge. >> it comes down to what caused this? miss lamb, i have read your testimony. it would be horrible to watch what was going on. and the same night i read another account, at 8:30 p.m. the ambassador said good night to a visiting turkish diplomat and the streets were empty but at 9:40 p.m. an explosion was heard by agents located in building b. it is absolutely preposterous to me that we would watch ambassador rice go out and say, five days later, i would sit in a briefing and, no, you have it all wrong. this is not a terrorist attack. this is a result of a 15-minute youtube. we are in denial or, unfortunately, and some of the members are concerned because i have to tell you it is very unfortunate that terrorists don't recognize this is an election year. they tend to do what they want any time they want and when we

gotten its vote except bill clinton in 1996. and that goes back to 1972. but we have a new poll from rocky mountain, a rocky mountain poll showing obama 42%, romney, 42% among all voters. that is surprising, because just a few weeks ago romney was ahead. we rate arizona as leaning romney, and this poll was taken after the presidential debate that most people thought, even president obama thought that he didn't bring his a-game. so it is a little bit surprising that this poll shows obama slightly ahead of romney. >> yeah, at least it makes the contest more interesting and not predictable. so let's talk about tuesday's debate format. our candy crowley, she is going to be great, make that raddatz, we knew was going to be great. how is this going to be different? >> well, it is a town hall format, different than just the usual area, the candidates are speaking directly to the voters themselves. they're having to gauge or maybe you know, modify their answers based on the reaction, right? it is a lot tougher, it presents a lot more opportunities for mistakes. you remember, don, in 1992, pr

clinton who we haven't seen much in the last new days is meeting with barack obama. it's a big news when he takes a day off the campaign trail. i'll remind everybody watching fox right now the day after september 11th when we lost our ambassador and three other brave souls the president went onto campaign in nevada. he reference epd the attack, went on, kept on the campaign trail and now these questions linger. i think before the election takes place we should know the truth about the economy, what the numbers really mean and we should know the truth about the sensitive issue of benghazi. this is a critical issue. whether it was confidence, or corruption, or politics we don't really know. but we know that they said one thing, and that was verify plea untrue. >> reporter: interesting that secretary of state hillary clinton is meeting with the president. there seems to be a schism in their narratives. it was hillary clinton who not immediately, but soon after started referring to this as a terrorist attack, well before the white house was willing to. and in stark can tros to what ambassado

committee chairman peter king is calling on secretary of state hillary clinton to take action. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge has been following the story since the beginning. she is joining us live from washington. >> reporter: thank you, jenna. one theme dominated at hearings yesterday on capitol hill. it was that official washington was preoccupied with reducing the number of american security personnel at the consulate and replacing them with libyan guards even after a series of attacks on diplomats. for the military and state department diplomatic security personnel on the ground a terrorist strike according to the testimony seemed inevitable give the escalating violence. requests for more security rejected in the bureaucratic nightmare of political washington. >> it's not the hardships, it is not the gunfire, it is not the threats. it is dealing and fighting against the people, programs, and personnel who are supposed to be supporting me and i added it by saying for me the taliban is on the inside of the building. >> reporter: but yesterday ambassador kenne

by secretary of state hillary clinton, stellar people whose integrity and credibility is beyond reproach in washington and around the world are going to ask the same exact questions of these witnesses and will then make attack and then i think the american people will try to piece all of this together, and see what happened whether it could have been prevented, and what can be done, most importantly, brooke, what could be done next time to make sure that this doesn't happen again. >> sure. you point out l.a. law and i know a lot of democrats are saying, look, this is just total political theater here today. >> on both sides. >> on both sides, let's be fair. in terms of the actual investigation, elise, has anyone been arrested that is accused of direct involvement in the deaths of the four americans? >> there have been about four libyans that have been arrested in libya. i'm not sure if they're libyan citizens, but people arrested by the libyans, not really sure whether the u.s. has had access to these individuals. there is also two individuals arrested in turkey that defense secretary pa

. that is inaccurate. hillary clinton, hillary clinton was the one who called assad a reformer. paul ryan was correct when he said that. the main foreign policy point to take away from last night's debate was the fact that vice president biden continues to mislead the american people what happened in benghazi. we saw sworn testimony this week that said the state department officials in benghazi had requested extra security. last night vice president biden said that was not true. they had not heard that. when the first attacks were made, the administration went out and said that it was because of protests, because of a youtube video. then we found out that wasn't true. so today the obama administration has a lot of questions to answer, why they're misleading the american people and who is right in these different circumstances. jon: and then there was this exchange with moderator martha raddatz from abc about taxes. i want to play you a clip of that. >> in terms of style, you know, joe biden is joe biden. he is authentic and he is real and he is straightforward and he --. jon: that was actually, that

, as president clinton said. the reality is that any past or on tax reform that promises to cut rates will either end up failing to reduce the deficit or failing to protect the middle class from a net tax increase. you can, at most, achieved two of these goals. anyone pushing a plan purporting to accomplish all three is not telling the truth. the sooner we are honest with ourselves about this, the easier it will be to negotiate an actual compromise on taxes and on deficit reduction. in 1986, we chose to cut the top rate and protect the middle class. we did not seek to reduce the deficit. simpson-bowles seeks to cut the top rate and reduce the deficit but did not shield the middle class. we need a third approach that project -- prioritizes reducing the deficit and protecting the middle class and is willing to forgo a reduction in the top rate and that is what i am proposing today. what should this proposal look like? it would have three principles -- first, as in 1986, it still makes sense to reduce the number of expenditures in the code to the extent possible. in figuring out which credits and de

is extraordinary important and secretary clinton announced massive amount of humanitarian assistance and ku dos to the administration for doing that. the real problem here is that there's this struggle within the romney campaign itself over syria between neo-conservatives to militarily intervene and those who actually are more reticent and the problem is that mr. romney flip flops between one group and the other and can't quite decide which one is more important. the bottom line, however, for purposes of american interest in the middle east, arming a rag tag group of rebels at this point in time is inconsistent with understanding when's going to emerge of syria in the long run. one of the reasons why i'm reticent is because we don't really know who the rebels are. some of them are affiliates of al qaeda. some of them funded by saudi clerics. some of them indeed very good guys and deserve support but very much an open question of who would get the arms. we don't want to repeat afghanistan back when congressman charlie wilson was doing that very same thing and it was 0 is a many bin laden who ben

clinton has said it bit convention. she would cut taxes by $4.1 trillion and cut spending by $360 billion. should cut taxes by 12 times the rate should cut spending. that's why the university of connecticut says it's a recipe for disaster on the deficit. >> your campaign has talked a great deal about middle-class tax cuts. not so much about poverty or issues of economic inequality. connecticut is a very well the state but our state capital, a recent report noted half of all children live in poverty. bridgeport, new haven, waterbury are not that far behind. what is your campaign doing to address poverty issues? are there any party programs that are off-limits from budget cuts? -- any poverty programs off limits from budget cuts? >> i absolutely believe we have to have a safety net in place to take care of those people who can't take care of themselves. they did not opt to be in this situation. we are a benevolent nation that we want to take care of those who can't take care of themselves. however, i think the best way out of poverty is to have a job. i want to make sure we give people oppo
